It
has been said that, “the mind absorbeth only what the seat can endureth.”
This is all too true in the lives of our children. In an age of sitting at desks and staring at screens, many children
struggle with the ability to maintain sustained attention in the classroom. If your child is between the ages of 5 and 15,
there is an opportunity to help your child improve his/her attention through the use of a hands-on and conservative program
and in many cases, without medication:
The Alert Program®
is an approach developed and provided by trained occupational therapists to teach children and parents the skill of self-regulation.
Self-regulation is defined as the ability to adjust arousal levels appropriately for a given situation. All children, including
typically developing children and children with special needs, have the ability to learn their own sensory processing and
attention needs. The Alert Program® uses simple terms to teach children how to learn what their body needs to keep their
attention “just right” for optimal learning. They begin to understand and verbalize when their own “engines”
feel in “high gear,” “low gear”, or “just right.” After understanding
their own attention span or “engine,” they learn strategies to keep their engine running just right. These
strategies help them self-regulate their daily experiences independently.
The Alert Program®
is a wonderful way to help children with decreased attention, hyperactivity, low activity levels, or sensory processing delays.
Our occupational therapists can help you be able to help your child to understand themselves in a way that promotes successful
learning experiences.
